Last year I was going through Dat Piff and I saw a rapper by the name of Logic. His mixtape had I think around 4 stars at the time but the picture of Frank Sinatra as the cover caught my eye. As a huge big band music fan, i said what the hell. Thats a ballsy move when Jay-Z pretty much refers to himself at the Sinatra of the rap game. That mixtape was Logic: Young Sinatra. I skipped the intro and went to a track called “Stewie Griffin” simply because of the obscure title. A gritty east coast beat strewn with Family Guy adlibs from a classic episode where Brian attempts to evade Stewie after losing a bet. Angered, Stewie turns into a sort of bookie and begins harassing, pummelling, and eventually using a flame thrower on his pal in order to coerce Brian into submission and eventually payment. I had to think to myself, wow I love this song already and I dont even know who this rapper is yet. Logic begins, “I’m Stewie Griffin and this game is Brian, beatin the hell out’ve it tryin, to get this money”. Immediately I thought, “damn, he tricked me using pop culture, he’s just like everyone else”. Then he followed with a fast paced, Jay-Z circa 1996 rap fire flow about how unlikely it is for him to ever blow up with music. Who does that? “Young Jedi, all I do is bread-I, said I…” I hadn’t hear that flow used in years. Smoothly crooning reminiscent of Drake, but with the ability to deliver indepth, clever and swiftly yes I was hooked. I finished the mixtape, put it on replay and decided this kid has next. I have been trying to tell my friends for the past year but they dont like new and unknown. Fair enough, even though I told them about “up and comers” Drake, Kid Cudi, Kanye West, Big Sean, Frank Ocean, The Weekend, Chip Tha Ripper, etc. If there’s one thing I know, it’s music and this kid is the future. I haven’t loved the tracks I’ve heard from Young Sinatra: Undeniable but Logic reminds us all that your least favorite song is some else’s favorite, so more power to him. Hes not a Drake rip off so if you hear “Numbers” or “Tic Tac Toe” understand he’s still building his fan base, and he merely showing his diversity. When Undeniable drops April 30th everyone will know his name. #RattPack
